It brought me back to my childhood, when every movie I saw had some kind of magical creature that I wanted to adopt. I want a Groot! I want a Rocket! I want a green Zoe Saldana! I want a tattooed Dave Batista! I want a ripped, sarcastic Chris Pratt!
So, want to guess the domestic weekend box office?
Such a hard call. It could be a disappointment initially, BUT word of mouth will be strong. The movie is hilarious and charming. People are not prepared.
I'm gonna say $60m-ish tops, but my gut is telling me more like $45 million. I expect a strong second week, though.
Best blockbuster I've seen since...fuck, I don't know. Jurassic Park?
This movie is the one I've been most excited for all summer. The early reviews are leading me to believe that wasn't a mistake.
I know that they've already announced the sequel, but I still want it to do very well. I'll put in my guess at 70m, but that's a biased, hope-based number.
You know, I really dislike most of the Marvel movies. I think they are wooden, boring, and all hit their inevitable crescendo of explosions during their third acts. This is looser, partially because it doesn't have to prop up the next movie (to prop up the next one to prop up the next Avengers...) and it's so much better for it.
Whereas I'm a big fan of the Marvel movies, and Guardians isn't a huge Marvel property.
But for me, the early trailer made this feel more like non-Tolkien fantasy. An adventure space fantasy made this right up my alley from the first trailer.
Well, both of us grossly underestimated the gross.

It's been hard to believe that I am excited for this movie, but I've been very impressed with all the trailers and the reviews thus far.
It's suddenly like any piece of any total junk franchise, from Pound Puppies to Street Sharks, could become a beautiful piece of art if the studio hires the right people to refurbish it.
