It would be really cool in my opinion to have a show set in 19th century New York, with music and production design this good, that was also well-written and well-acted.
I really like The Knick so far.
It's so bad.
I don't think so. I think the directing is great, and the acting is mostly very good. As for the writing, I'm not sure yet—maybe it'll come together more by the end of the season—but at the very least it's an interesting show, certainly more so than anything else on premium cable now.
It's beautifully shot and the soundtrack is fantastic but the writing is horrific and the acting is FINE at best and BAD at worst.
Okay, the most recent episode was pretty bad. But overall, I still think the show is good.

I'm undecided on the show itself though. I think it's slick and I'm interested in the concept but I can't get past the racism. Like, I know why the doctors are racist and it would be kinda suspect if they weren't considering the setting, but I've curated my TV watching habits to ensure that the n-word doesn't get random hurled at me from the screen so it kind of threw me off. I do enjoy rooting for Dr. Edwards though, and the sanitation storyline is equal parts disgusting and fascinating to me.
Can't remember the last time I saw a racism subplot that was this heavy-handed and tone-deaf. The show is so "prestige" that it gets lost on people, but it's really like the bad-old-days, 90s style of portraying race and racism. Just hitting you over the head with its own nobility and profundity for showing you the creators are enlightened, without really giving you meaningful reasons to invest emotionally in the characters that are living that plot.
