Jazz is good. It is also difficult to defend without coming off like an egghead. I think the argument that "jazz is boring" comes from the fact that it requires more active engagement on the listener's part than pop music. Sometimes it's cerebral, but it doesn't have to be; there is a bodily thrill I get from a good soloist that's hard to come by in other genres.
The WaPo guy makes one good, important point—"This music has retreated from the nightclub to the academy. It is shielded from commercial failure by the American cultural-institutional complex,"—but a lot of his argument is dumb. It doesn't have words! Improvisation is bad because Phish is bad!
I think it's basically impossible to argue about jazz. People who know they like jazz know they *should* like jazz and people who already like jazz don't really feel like explaining why the people who don't like jazz should like jazz.
Jazz sucks.
Being drunk in New Orleans is pretty fun though.
